Cheap Dumbells

No not the one sitting next to you at the bar this weekend; I'm talking about the kind you put on flies. I like to have eyes on my flies I don't need them but I like them. That said I have a hard time forking out $3 for 10 dumbells just to loose them. If you don't mind having a set of dumbells that are slightly off center and are hollow at one end try some BB gun pellets to add weight to your flies. If you don't want the hollow end fill it with epoxy or I fill it with UV knot sense and hit it with the UV light for 60 seconds. You also can glue 3D eyes on the end or paint it. The best part is you can get 250 of them for only a couple of dollars. They come in .22 cal and .177 cal, big enough for some small pike flies and clousers.

Crazy Canadians

Were not all this nuts in the Canada but once and a while a video comes along that make you think were all crazy. This was found by a friend of mine and I thought I would share what we really do in the winter.

Jvice 444

Here is the 444th vice made by Jay in South Africa.

Well the new Jvice has finally hit the door step. I managed to take a few pictures but I'll do my best to get some better images and a bit of a review up in the new year. All I can say now is that I'm very happy with it.

Top view with the Pro Jaws mounted on the side of the base. I have the streamer attachement for this but neglected to take a picture of it.

These pro jaws can hold a very large hook.

Vise with the midge jaws "Small Fluff"

More Small Fluff - Size 12 1X fly in the midge jaws, lots of room to work. You can bend the hook in the jaws, it really holds the small hooks tight.

Size 18 fly in the midge jaws, and still lots of room to work. I had a bare size 22 in it a couple of days ago and when I find the hooks again I'll post a picture. These jaws are great for the small stuff.

The vise can also be mounted on the front of the base if you need it closer to you.

So far I'm really impressed with this vise and Jay over at Jvice is great to deal with.

I made a tying station a month or so ago out of oak and maple, it a little rough and it still needs to be stained. The front of the base needs to be extended out 3 inches then the Jvice will slide right into the perfect docking station.

I've been playing with the flashtail whistler. This ones tied on a 1/0 hook. I've fished it for pike and it works well. I hope to get it out on the saltwater for what it was meant for one day. The grizzly at the sides don't match up too well in the picture but they do straighten out when you get them wet.

This is a simple yet effective pike fly.

This ones tied on a 2/0 saltwater hook.
tied with a Magnum bunny strip over crystal flash with bead chain eyes and red saddle hackle. This is a fast and easy tie if your rushed to get out there and fish.

Tie Dye Pike Fly

Been playing with some Icelandic Sheep hair. The stuff is very colorfull and has great movement in the water. I tested this guy out on the weekend and netted a little 4 pounder on the first cast. In half an hour casting from the shore I managed 3 with this guy. I really need to start bringing my camera when I go out.

Pike Dusters

These are not as pretty as the flies that PikeFFArticles makes but they are very effective.
